Sheena Cameron and Louise Dempsey held a PD session on balanced reading programmes. The balance being talked about was between modelled reading, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. One of my key takeaways from this PD was to use template follow-up tasks rather than specifically created tasks. I tend towards the latter, which is in Sheena and Louise's words, unsustainable.
Hi Greg
ReplyDeleteThe message of sustainability as working smarter not harder was one I also took away as it gives us more energy to focus on teaching the students in front of us and time to help them strengthen their connections to the learning. I tend to use the same templates across the board so a summary template used in a reading lesson is also used in an inquiry or writing etc. This really helps my learners make connections to the strategy you want them to use and allows them to see that what they learn in one area can help them make connections in another.
Look forward to hearing about the changes you make in your program.
